The Tooth Fairy Story Review: Animated Adventure with a Sprinkling of Kid-Appropriate Tween Romance
Throughout this animated adventure for preteens, the fairy community focuses on collecting teeth from slumbering youngsters and placing treasure beneath where they sleep. Skateboarding teenage rebel fairy Van (brought to life by Booboo Stewart) shows little enthusiasm about devoting his life to collecting baby teeth—a feeling that’s entirely reasonable. He’s only slightly more curious about the financial workings behind it all: the fairies hand over the molars to mysterious goblins, who provide metal as payment. But Van’s curiosity is piqued when he spots a goblin (voiced by Larkin Bell), who turns out to be not at all the ugly gnome he expected.
A Forbidden Connection and Shared Threat
Everything is prepared for an adventure with a light sprinkling of young love (though it’s very much suitable for children). The fairy and goblin communities are separated from one another, and there’s nothing like the thrill of the forbidden to bring people as one. The two species as seen here are incredibly similar, yet both maintain biased views about the opposite side. The fairies are said to be entitled types, given to taking anything they want, while the goblins are reportedly stupid, foul-smelling, and backward, but are in fact intelligent and technologically advanced.
Naturally, such a setup requires a common enemy to unite against, and that need is met by a group of vicious spiders, voiced by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. They make no secret with these guys: they aim to devour the goblins and fairies, and they make for quite savage, though not especially competent, villains.
Target Audience and Final Thoughts
You won’t find very many children’s animations aimed at the kind of audience that is starting to experience first crushes, but aren’t yet old enough for whatever 14-year-olds view these days in lieu of Twilight. Should your youngster falls into this age group, this is unlikely to be their next favorite movie, but you could do worse.
The Tooth Fairy Story arrives in movie theaters in Scotland from 10 October and across the United Kingdom from 24 October.
